The 444-mile Natchez Trace Parkway commemorates an ancient trail that connected southern portions of the Mississippi River, through Alabama, to salt licks in today's central Tennessee. Today, visitors can experience this National Scenic Byway and All-American Road through driving, hiking, biking, horseback riding, and camping.
Directions:
In Natchez, Mississippi - The southern terminus of the Parkway is accessed off of Liberty Road in Natchez, Mississippi. Technically, this is starting your trip from the historical "beginning" of the Old Trace, in Natchez, at milepost zero.
In Jackson, Mississippi - There are two major access points in the Jackson area. One access is from I-20, and the other from I-55.
In Tupelo, Mississippi - U.S. Highway 78 (future I-22) accesses the Parkway.
In Cherokee, Alabama - U.S. Highway 72 accesses the Parkway.
Southwest of Nashville, Tennessee - The northern terminus of the Parkway (milepost 444) intersects with Tennessee Highway 100 about 17 miles southwest of downtown Nashville. Travelers can follow signs here for McCrory Lane to get to I-40, west of Nashville.
Activities:
In the trail's 1987 comprehensive plan, four segments near Nashville, Jackson, and Natchez totaling 110 miles were selected for development as hiking and horseback trails. Several locations along the four sections of National Scenic Trail accommodate horse trailers. Contact the Parkway at 1-800-305-7417 for information on how to access trail heads for the four sections of National Scenic Trail located just off the 444-mile Natchez Trace Parkway.
